Traditional Scottish pub experience

"The Guildford Arms" in Edinburgh, Scotland, is a historic pub and restaurant that has been run by the Stewart family since 1896 and is considered one of the country’s most famous "People's Palaces." Located in the heart of the New Town, not far from the bustling Waverley Station, it embodies the splendor of the Victorian era and is an outstanding example of the "Golden Age" of Scottish pub design. The building, designed by architect Robert Macfarlane Cameron, captivates with its opulent architecture and has established itself over the decades as a popular meeting place for a diverse clientele – from locals to tourists, businesspeople, and students who appreciate both the historical atmosphere and the culinary offerings.

Victorian architecture in Edinburgh

The cuisine of "The Guildford Arms" focuses on traditional Scottish dishes made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Particularly popular is the "Steak Pie," a hearty dish featuring tender meat in a rich gravy, enveloped in a crispy crust, capturing the essence of Scottish comfort food. Another highlight is the "Fish Chowder," a creamy soup with fresh fish and a delicate hint of dill, praised for its warmth and flavor. For lovers of classic pub fare, there is "Haggis, Neeps and Tatties," known for its spicy seasoning and the perfect balance of potatoes and turnips. Meals are served both on the ground floor and in the impressive Gallery Restaurant, which offers a view of the magnificent bar and the ornate ceiling. Complementing the offerings is a remarkable selection of real ales, making the pub a paradise for beer enthusiasts.

Food and drink in the pub

The ambiance of "The Guildford Arms" is unique and reflects its Victorian heritage. The public bar area is dominated by a spectacular Jacobean ceiling, featuring elaborate carvings and gilded details – a remnant of the former grandeur that emerged as a counterpoint to the dark, cramped pubs of the city during the temperance movement. Large arched windows with etched glass, an imposing bar with blue porcelain hand pumps, and a mirrored spirits counter contribute to the majestic atmosphere. The Gallery Restaurant on the upper floor provides an elevated perspective of the bustling activity below and is especially popular with guests who wish to enjoy the historical charm. During the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the pub transforms into a stage for live music, such as "Caledonian Folk at The Guildford," further enhancing the already vibrant atmosphere.

Family-friendly restaurant Edinburgh

The service is often described as friendly and efficient, with staff eager to provide guests with a pleasant experience. The speed with which drinks and food are served is particularly noted, which is remarkable for a pub of this size. However, during peak times, such as during the festival or on weekends, it can become crowded and noisy, which some perceive as part of the charm while others find slightly disruptive. The team emphasizes a warm welcome and caters to individual requests, such as recommending one of the many Scottish beers. Children over five years old are welcome in the Gallery Restaurant, making the pub attractive for families as well.

Fantastic pub! Amazing architecture with beautiful intricate ceiling mouldings. We went on a match day so very full of rugby fans but a great atmosphere and so friendly. 10 real Ale handpumps, most of which were local and the two we had were great and in great condition.

Great pub with excellent beer, but currently half closed. Couldn't get seat, and shouted out by grumpy man when I dared sit at a table reserved for food, which wasn't signed. Disappointing return to an old local pub. Avoid until they re-open.

The Last stop on our tour of over 17 pubs around Edinburgh. Here we sampled an Alchemy Stratos IPA and an Orkney Dark Island. Another Victorian pub with incredible woodwork on the inside and a warming atmosphere, perfect for an after work pint.

Beautiful pub in great location but the food was pretty average I must say! Chicken / haggis dish was very dry which was disappointing for the price paid.

A lovely atmospheric gem throwback to a different era with all the requirements for today's customers. The food could not be faulted first time my husband hasn't had to season a meal. Would expect to pay a lot more for the care taken with the meal.
